HTO - High Tibial Osteotomy
HTO or High Tibial Osteotomy is done in patients of osteoarthritis knee Osteoarthritis is debilitating problem in which knees become painful on walking or on prolonged standing. The ultimate treatment for it is knee replacement. But if it is treated in time at initial stages than replacement can be avoided. In younger age group (40-60 Years) and in initial stages of osteoarthritis knee, HTO is preferred mode of treatment. There is complete relief from pain, degenerative changes of knee slow down and one can lead a healthy and active life. The knee replacement can either be avoided or prolonged for many years.
In HTO, tibial osteotomy is done and bone can be either fixed by dynamic plates and screws, after realignment or realignment is done slowly by Ilizarov method. The Ilizarov method is preferred over plating as the results of correction are more accurate and long lasting.
